L'Euroleague a été créée, telle qu'on la connait aujourd'hui, au tout début des années 2000. Elle a totalement remplacé la FIBA European Champions Cup en 2001 pour devenir la plus grande ligue européenne. Aujourd'hui, l'Euroleague est composée de 18 équipes. Certaines disposent d'une licence permanente tandis que les deux autres disposent d'une Wild Card.
L'Euroligue se dispute de manière similaire à la NBA avec une saison régulière et une phase de playoffs. Cependant, les clubs qui y participent doivent jongler entre leur championnat national et la coupe européenne.
Dans cette compétition, chaque équipe s'affronte deux fois. Au total, elles ont donc 34 matchs chacune en plus de leurs matchs nationaux. À l'issue de la saison régulière, les 10 premières équipes au classement jouent les playoffs, avec une phase de playin pour les équipes classées entre la 7e et la 10e. Après le playin, les quarts de finale se jouent de la même manière qu'en NBA avec des matchs sous forme de série. La première équipe arrivée à 3 victoires remporte la série.
La suite de la compétition se joue sous forme de final four avec deux demi-finales, une petite finale et une finale. Cette fois, chacun de ces matchs se joue en match sec.
